Six non-whites in trials
NZPA Johannesburg j South African rugby selectors have named 60 players — al! but six of them white — to take part in trials for the forthcoming test , series against the Brit-' ish Lions. The list, which included two black and four coloured (mixed race), players, was quickly criticised by rugby writers round the country. One newspaper headlined :
jits story “Shocks galore for Bok trials.” . The “Rand Daily Mail,” of Johannesburg, said in a front page story that three of the non-whites had been selected at the expense of better white players, charging that the selectors had “violated the principle of merit selection.” None of the non-whites is expected to make the final squad to play the Lions.
