Workers heed Mugabe call

NZPA-Reuter Salisbury The Rhodesian Government has 'Said that some 3000 strikers in vital industries have agreed to return to work following a radio and television appeal by the Prime Minister (Mr Robert Mugabe). Their return appeared to show that, the new Government had successfully countered its first serious challenge since Mr Mugabe came to power in last month’s independence elections.

A Labour Ministry statement said more than 16,000 workers from 46 firms were involved in strikes, walk-

outs, stoppages, and goslows in the past 10 days, to press various demands including better wages and working conditions. Mr Mugabe, in his nationwide aopeal for a return to work, said the strikes were politically motivated to bring a ’ breakdown in law and order.

He singled out bakery workers for particular criticism. Their strikes, causing a bread shortage which left manv people hungry, were “nothing short of criminal,” he said. A Government statement said workers had agreed to return to work in all but two cases.
