Clampdown on T.E.P. use
The Labour Department i had hardened its attitude to-1 wards the use of Temporary: Employment Programme! workers by local bodies, the! reserves committee of the! Paparua County Council was! told last evening. The Deputy Countv Engineer (Mr G. L. Tapper) said a change of thinking in the department meant that it might no longer approve the use of T.E.P. workers for local body projects with a large building content. Although the policy was not yet formal he had been told of the change by officers in the department this week. Mr Tapper was commenting on notification to the council that planned exten-j sions to facilities at Denton I Park would not be eligible! under the programme. Coun-| cil staff had estimated the; work to cost between $6OOO ’
land $7OOO but without the ■ ibenent of the scheme a : tentative estimate was !1514,000. :| Mr Tapper said the departement would not approve the /work as a “discrete project.” The Deputy County Clerk (Mr G. R. Head) said: “We . have been unfortunate in that one or two organisations have taken advantage of it (T.E.P.).” The work proposed for Denton Park would relocate the ambulance room and would provide dressing and shower facilities for four sports teams and similar facilities for referees and linesmen. The entrance and ticket box would also be relocated. ! The committee voted to J leave the project for further (consideration when council ■■estimates for next year are iset.
