Late sport Runaway bowls win
PA Palmerston North The Dominion singles champion, Mrs Rhoda Ryan (Matamata), continued her domination of New Zealand women’s bowls this year with a runaway,. 21-8, win over Merle Symes (Hastings) in the final of the Manawatu women’s bowling centre’s Broadlands invitation singles yesterday.
Mrs Ryan thus improved on last year’s placing in this tournament — she was beaten by’ Mrs Joyce Osborne (Manawatu) that time, but she made no race of it against a nervous Mrs Symes, who struggled throughout to find her green and weight. Mrs Osborne, beaten in section play won the plate.
Mrs Ryan reached the final after having a little bit of luck against the pre-
viously unbeaten Mrs Lek Kimber (Christchurch), who reached 20 first but couldn’s manage the last point as Mrs Ryan grabbed anothef five.
The rather wayward weight displayed at times in this match by Mrs Ryart wasn’t repeated in the finak She struck her line and length quickly and never 1 gave the Hastings player a chance.
Mrs Symes, in her turn, comfortably beat Mrs Heather Richardson in the other semi-final. Mrs Symes won, 21-10, and Mrs Richardson couldn’t put her game together as she had earlier irj the tournament, when shd won Section A against a talented field of bowlers including five New Zealand titleholders and the Australian champion, Dorothy Roche.
