Increase in farm output
PA Wellington The value of New Zealand’s gross farm output rose 25 per cent in the year to March 31, 1979, compared with the previous year, according to ■ estimates by the Department of Statistics. The value for the year remained virtually stationary compared with 1976-1977. Although there, were increases, in the value- of dairy production, crops, and horticulture, the most significant increases were in receipts for livestock and wool. Increased slaughtering of cattle <; and ■ sheep caused a drop. - iri numbers ph the farms,- .and only pigs and deer, showed any significant increases. The costs of goods and services, salaries, wages and interest rose by 23.9 per cent. . These costs were held to a certain extent by a-reduced application Of fertiliser. To a certain extent subsidies covered increased spending .in animal health; arid weed and pest control.- .' . - > ' The over-all ;■ result. was that proprietory incbhie rose by .42.3 per cent, whereas it declined by 14.7 per cent in 1977-1978.
