‘No new charge oil prescriptions’
PA Wellington There are no proposals to introduce a charge for prescriptions outside the existing part-charges, the Minister of Health (Mr Gair) has said. .
He said that Labour’s shadow Minister- .of Health, Mr F. D. O’Flynn, who had expressed concern about possible moves to introduce charges, was indulging in a "hunt' for phantoms.” “There is no proposal to introduce a charge.. for prescriptions outside the existing pattern of partcharges which has been in place for quite some time’” Mr Gair said.
“The matter of a' possible general prescription charge to. achieve ■ savings in the pharmaceutical bill was,, looked at last- year
and a decision riot" to was taken in a lead up to the Budget. “An. alternative approach to see 'what could be done ■ administratively or by better training or in other ways, was the subject of study by three working parties 1 set up last July.
■“The reports of these working parties are now with .me and I will be assessing the value of their recommendations over the next, few montbs. “The recommendations do not include a general charge on prescriptions and such a proposal was not in the, brief.of any of the three working parties,” Mr Gainsaid.'
“I .suggest that ..Mr O’Flynn should find another phantom To chase,”- 1
