PA Wellington More than 90 clothing trade machinists in Wanganui will lose their jobs on April 11 because of production shut-downs by two manufacturers. An undisclosed number of storemen and packers, drivers, and other workers will also lose their jobs on that date.

The general secretary of the Clothing Workers’ Federation (Mr F. Thom) said the firms that were closing were Jewel Quilting, which is transferring its operations to Auckland, and Chilco, Ltd;

Mr Thorn said he had been informed by the Labour Department in Wanganui that no work existed for the clothing workers who will lose their jobs. Almost 800 people, a lot of them women, were already unemployed in Wanganui, Mr Thorn said.
