Student continues fast

A Canterbury University student is continuing his fast in < support of Indonesian overstayer, Mr Jose Satyadharma, in spite of comments yesterday by the Undersecretary for Immigration (Mr Malcolm) that the starvation threat was "silly” and would not help Mr Satyadharma.

Mr Garth Ritchie threatens to starve himself to death unless he is assured of the safety of Mr Satyadharma, who has been in hiding from immigration officials for almost a month. Mr Ritchie said last evening that after four days with, out food he felt tired and weak, but would continue the fast in the hope that as it continued, the authorities would take more notice, and give the assurances he required. A petition calling for political asylum in New Zealand for Mr Satyadharma had 1000 signatures, showing the public support for his cause; said Mr Ritchie.
