Cook Strait record
PA Wellington An Auckland hairdresser, Belinda Shields, swam Cook Strait in record time yesterday. . Miss Shields, aged 18, clipped 24 minutes off the previous record set by a Hawke’s Bay schoolgirl, Rhonda Smidt, on March 10. Miss Shields swam south to north. Her time was Bhrs 32min. She entered the water at Perano Head and touched the North Island near Ohau Point. “I’m really delighted,” she said after the swim.
