Swamp traps woman

PA ■- Tauranga A short cut home on Saturday night proved disastrous for a middle-aged Tauranga woman. She spent six hours trapped in a swamp. When searchers found her in the gully between Coopers Road and Cameron Road about 4 a.m. on Sunday she was up to the waist in mud and water.

The Tauranga police yesterday praised residents of the area who helped in the search which took place in the dark in difficult conditions.

They said the woman had left friends about 10 p.m. to go home, but lost her bearings in the dark while taking a short cut and ended up in an overgrown and swampy’ gully. Her calls for help were heard by residents who called the police at 2.53 a.m. on Sunday. Because of the difficult terrain and the darkness, it was not until 4 a.m. that searchers found the woman. She was exhausted by her ordeal, but unharmed.
