Cattle show had ‘best in years’

“Some of the best cattle in this competition in years” was how a grading supervisor for the Meat Board (Mr iE. Bell) described entries in l the Mid-Canterbury district 'export beef competition held iat the Islington works of Waitaki N.Z. Refrigerating, I Ltd. In the 220 kg and over class, the Maine Anjou-cross cattle exhibited ' by the Graham family of Tai Tapu [won all the top places.

■ Mr Bell picked out a Maine Anjou carcase from an animal exhibited by Mrs M. Graham as being his “pick of the show,” with perfect fat cover and ideal fat measurement over the ribeye. Mrs Graham’s entry was placed first in the hooks and the cuts sections. A three-quarter Charolais Friesian-cross from B. T. Fisher (Greenpark) placed first on both hooks and cuts in the 300 kg and over class. A feature of this carcase was its ribeye, which was “phenomenal.” This was an exceptionally good yielding carcase, Mr Bell said". Associated with Mr Bell in the judging were Messrs F. Butt and T. Gealey.

Another observer was impressed with the way exhibitors had produced animals that were not overfat. The competition was organised by the Methven Agricultural and Pastoral Association. and included cattle run in its weight gaingrazing trial.

A Charolais-cross Angus from J. M. and J. H. Sutherland (Waimate) and a Maine Anjou-cross from D. P. Graham and Sons (Tai Tapu) tied for having put on beef worth the most money during the trial from November to March. The beef the cattle produced from that time was worth $67.60.
