Cycle stands

Sir, — It is good news (“The Press,” February 26) that the number of people cycling into the city has shown a “substantial increase.” Since most cars carry only one person into the city, ’lO bicycles represent nearly 10 fewer cars bringing congestion and pollution, and burning fuel. This is to be encouraged. Mr Gadd said that new areas for cycle stands reduce metered car spaces. Each of the latter lost provides space for; 10 bicycles, a considerable gain. One of the many advantages of using a bicycle is mobility. One can go right to a shop or office, do one’s business and be away again. By the time the car driver has found a place to park he still has to walk some blocks to his destination. To encourage further replacement of cars by bicycles, we must provide for this with •plentiful bicycle stands, even at the expense of some car parking. — Yours, etc., JIM McCAHON. February 26, 1980.
