Rebels control Surinam
NZPA-Reuter The Hague Rebel soldiers yesterday appeared to have taken firm control of the former Dutch colony of Surinam after staging a lightning military coup, according to reports reaching the Netherlands.
But it was not clear how long the junior officers who staged the coup, on Monday intended to stay in control of the South American coun-
try, whose economy , is heavily dependent on its former colonial master. The Dutch news agency, A.N.P., says . at least six people were killed in fighting . triggered off by the Surinam Government’s refusal to allow the formation of a soldiers’, trade union. Dutch officials said) the Surinamese- capital of Paramaribo was calm. although
the army officers who have set up an organisation' calling itself the National Military Council had imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew.
No opposition was report* ed to the coup, which came after simmering discontent in the 800-strong army after the arrest on January 30 of three non-commissioned officers for trying to estabh ish a soldiers’ union.
