Ruling on reporting

NZPA-Reuter London The British Press Council, after an inquiry into the case of a medical professor who killed himself after an outbreak of smallpox, said yesterday that it had failed to establish that any journalist or news organisation had acted improperly or inconsiderately towards the professor or his family. The council emphasised, however, that a man already under stress as the central figure in a crisis of public concern should not be left vulnerable to the heavy pressure of public, press, radio, and television inquiries as well. The council’s inquiry concerned issues raised by the Birmingham City Coroner at a 1978 inquest on Professor Henry Bedson, head of the meclical microbiology department at Birmingham University.
