Flying Fifteen title
Ken Chappell and Mike Ure (Auckland) won the national Flying Fifteen yachting championships that finished on the Otago Harbour yesterday. The last race, held in a 20-knot southerly that at times gusted to 35 knots, proved to be the deciding event. Up until then with five races completed, Roger Craddock (Auckland) and lan Halsted (Dunedin) led the overall championship with a slim margin of fewer than three points—having decisively won the morning’s race, held In a light wind. Craddock had only to finish second to Chappell to win over-
all but they ran- into difficulties in the heavy conditions and dropped from fifth to eleventh place after broaching near a mark. Realising that they would not be able to catch the leaders they withdrew. Leading results: Ken Chappell (Auckland) 16.7, 1; Roger Craddock (Auckland) 19.4, 2; Barrie Finlayson (Napier) 20.7, 3; Tony Dalllmore (Napier) 29, 4; Peter Wilson (Napier) 49.7, 5; Ray Shearer (Dunedin) 55.4, 6; Leatham Edmond (Dunedin) 58, 7; Paul Pritchett (Canterbury) 63-7. 8; Barrie Campbell (Auckland) 66.7, 9; Michael McPhail (Canterbury) 75,10; Lance Dixon (Dunedin)'B3, 11. ■ ’ .
