Women’s bowls pairs
Two Kaths—Curtain and Williamson—gave their Mt Pleasant club its first big women’s bowls title for a number of years when they won the champion-of-cham-pions pairs in impressive style yesterday. Mrs Williamson, the skip, has been a prominent bowler for a number of years and she has now won both the singles and the pairs championships. Mrs Curtain, who led exceptionally well, only took the game up seriously less than two years ago. In the final, Mrs Williamson beat Alice Whiting (Woolston W.M.C.), who was seeking the title for a third time.. But Mrs Whiting, whose partner was Elsie Tennant, was well beaten at 20-12 with the last end unplayed. The Mt Pleasant pair, with consistently good bowls, were 13-5 up after eleven ends and although Mrs Whiting played one
o r two. good shots to close the gap to 'l3-10 after fourteen ends there was never much doubt over the latter stages about who was going to win.
In the semi-finals, Mrs Williamson came away on the last three ends to beat Joan Rennie (Rangiora) and Mrs Whiting had a five on the penultimate end to thank for her 19-17 win over Altha Triggs (Riccarton Women’s). Results:—
Quarter-finals. —A. Whiting (Woolston W.M.C.) 24, M. McCahon (Fendalton) 15; A. Triggs (Riccarton Women’s) 27, F. Lawrence (Papanui W.M.C.) 11; J. Rennie (Rangiora) 24, E. Le Comte (Kirwee) 19; K. Williamson (Mt Pleasant) 24, M. Boone (Lincoln) 15. Semi-finals—Whiting 19, Triggs 17; Williamson 18, Rennie 13. Final.—Williamson 20, 'Whiting 12.
