Wall Street last week
The Wall Street sharemarket was volatile last week, and prices fluctuated sharply m the four days of trading. Prices showed substantial falls on Tuesday and Thursday, with an equally sharp recovery on Wednesday. However, the Dow Jones industrial average closed on Friday at 868.77 — a rise of 0.25 points on the day but. a fall of 16.21 points on the week.
Increases in interest rates, and renewed fears of in flation dominated investors’ sentiment. Oil stocks bucked the trend, continuing to climb amid investor interest in exploratory drilling off the Newfoundland coast. Closing prices on Friday of a selection of shares were:—•_.
