Unplanned trip

PA Hamilton Two Whitianga men, out for an evening’s fishing near the Aldermen • Islands, off the Coromandel coast, were yesterday on an unplanned trip to Noumea after their trawler sank. Colin Bray and Les Lowrie’s overseas trip began at 10.30 p.m. on Wednesday about four hours after the 16m Isabelle M sank. The fishermen took to their liferaft and after firing two flares were picked up by the Capitaine Wallace, a freighter bound for Noumea. Arrangements to have the men transferred to another Whitianga boat were unsuccessful. They are expected to fly back to New Zealand after the four-day trip to New Caledonia. It is not known why the Isabelle M. sank. Mrs Bray said from Whitianga that the accident had scuttled their fishing business. “We lost everything,” she said.
