Graham Sutherland

Sir, — The passing of Graham Sutherland reminds me a little of the occasion in 1954 when the portrait of Sir Winston Churchill was: unveiled for the first time. It was felt that perhaps the legs were not bold enough to force the effect of fore-* shortening on the seated fi* gure. Then again, the shoul* der line was a little too high and. may be a sight too wide. The familiar, square, jaw was lost .against the round, moon face, and should^,have been drawn with,;'the J head lowered in the region'of the jaw. No doubt Sm Winston and Lady Churchill lacked the trained critical ■ faculty which prompted them to disfavour the finished -canvas. There can, however, be no doubt as to Sutherland’s own viewpoint .and this must be his epitaph. He saw Sir Winston “as' a rock.” And so be it. — Yours, etc-.,--? ; WILLIAM LEAMON. February 19, 1980.
