Challenge to umpires
Sir, — I hope that Nancy Northcroft’s letter (February 19) — which ends: “There is only one person in the whole ground who is •in a position to make a proper l.b.w. decision. He is the umpire at the bowler’s end” — would be copied and sent to every TV commentator in New Zealand and made available to the extra speakers in the TV commentary group who broadcast. TV, as
Miss .Northcroft explains, is not in a position to give a picture that is always at the exact angle that shows a ball, a bat, a fieldsman in movement to make clear exactly what is happening; no pairs of cameras could be. Spectators at the ground are generally able to tell when their seats are not going to give them a sight at the batsman’s, fielders’ or bowler’s angle, but for some reason TV> viewers sometimes do not appear to realise this and no diagrams are shown in advance to let them know it. — Yours, etc., SADIE G. BALKIND. February 19, 1980.
