Waitangi boycott suggested

PA Auckland Maori elders at Waitangi will come under strong pressure early next month to boycott the Treaty of Waitangi celebrations. It will not be the first time such action has been urged upon elders, but this year they are likely to face more intense pressure, and from a wider variety of groups. The independent member of Parliament for Northern Maori, Mr M. Rata, has confirmed that he will put the boycott proposal to the people of the Tai Tokerau marae shortly before Waitangi Day. Mr Rata said successive Governments had made no attempt to honour the spirit and the letter of the treaty and Maoris had nothing to celebrate. His party, Mana Motuhake, would work towards the time when Maoris could join the country in the treaty celebrations. A Maori leader, Mr S. Jackson, has also predicted calls for a boycott. “What would happen is that you would have a celebration of Waitangi Day perpetuating the myth that there is only one people. But there would be only pakehas there,” he said.
