Craft abandoned
PA Wellington Two Wellington men were blown on to Cape Palliser in a liferaft last night after having abandoned their crippled yacht in raging seas. The men told the police
they had been sailing from Whangarei to Wellington when their 9 metre yacht Valine had broken its mast. The liferaft was sighted at 8.30 p.m. by children on the beach at Ngawi, aboiit 3km on the Wellington side of the Cape Palliser lighthouse. The liferaft was blown past the lighthouse and came ashore near White Rock. Ngawi residents met the men as they landed and gave mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to one of them. The men, one on a stretcher, were taken to a four-wheel-drive vehicle and transferred to an ambulance at the lighthouse. At 11 p.m. the men were on their way to the Masterton Hospital to be treated for exposure. The Valine was still afloat when last sighted by the men but little hope was held for its safety. The Cape Palliser Search and Rescue co-ordinator (Mr B. Brough) said the seas were “tremendous: the worst I have seen for years.” •
