Softball trial match
PA Invercargill The Waikato batter, Bruce Mackintosh,' demonstrated his ability again yesterday in the New Zealand softball trial when smashing a home run off the ace pitcher, Kevin Herlihy, over the fence of the main enclosure at Surrey Park; Invercargill. Team-mates in the Rothmans Cup winning Waikato team at -the tournament, Mackintosh showed his real capabilities against Herlihy and scored the first run of the No. 2 team. Hutt Valley’s Paul Magan kept things tight and it was the bottom of the fourth innings before the No t 1 team was able to score.

base hit, took third on a passed ball and then came home on another passed ball., ■■ : ? However by that stage the No. 2 team had taken two more runs. Wellington’s Wayne Nichols made the first off a hit when Campbell wasn’t able to get the out off a bunt. Nichols made second when the first base, • John Money, was slqw in deciding where to throw the ball off a Mackintosh bunt. Then when Campbell fielded a hit and threw over third base. Wayne Lamb was unable to hold the ball for a tag. f Nichols then came home, and Mackintosh scored the third run off a Jeff Strom hit. ' ( ;■ I '. . > ' ' I Several team changes
were made in the sixth innings and the two Wellington pitchers, Kevin Henderson, for the No. 1 team, and Loran Algar, for the No. 2 team, pitched impressively. Algar made six strikeouts during his -spell, while. Henderson made five. } However the No. 2 ; team increased its lead -in 'the eighth innings when Nichols hit down the right line for a two-bagger. He. came, home after Henderson caught a hard drive from Mackintosh. He immediately turned and looked for a tag on second base- but misdirected his throw and. allowed Nichols to. run in. for his second run. To finish the game, the No. 1 team scored its second, run in the ninth innings when: Bob’ Jones, of Hutt Valley, came home. .■<V v ■ ‘ '
