Deep draught aids port popularity

The number of vessels arriving; directly from overseas ports or 1 ..sailing directly to them from Lyttelton increased dramatically ( last year and continues to show i improvement—a factor con- ] tributed to by the port’s deep draught berthage. 1 The harbourmaster (Captain J. A. Barbour), said vessels were I increasingly making their first New Zealand visit to Lyttelton J :so as to discharge sufficient cargo to enable them to berth at other t ports which were shallower. 1 Likewise. Lyttelton was often the last port of call for departing 1 overseas vessels wishing to “top off” their cargoes. With the exception of Marsden Point. Lyttelton has the deepest 1 draught of any New Zealand port. In the year to September 30, the port piloted 169 vessels ar- ’ riving from or departing to overseas norts. Countries of origin : and destination included Australia <64). Pacific Islands «3t), : North America (14). Singapore and the Persian Gulf <l2 each), ; .Janan <lOl. Antarctica <lb. The total was 169. as comparedwith 106 the previous vear. In the period from October 1 ■ to November 26. seven vessels arrived in port direct from over-; seas. Three were from Australia,' two from Singapore, and one’ each from Christmas Island and Nauru. Three vessels sailed directly I for overseas ports from Lyttel-| ton during the same period: the Botanv Ba' for Jeddah, the Mayfield for the West ’ndies, and, the Sea Tide for China.
