Bill seeks cut in S.I. power charges
PA Wellington A private member’s bill aimed at giving electricity tariff concessions to all South Island consumers and to North Island industry is expected to be introduced in Parliament today. The bill seeks to reduce the tariff rate by cutting Government interest rates for supply authorities and electricity development projects. In Parliament yesterday the Opposition member fori Taupo (Mr J. W. Ridley) gave notice of his intention to in- [ troduce the bill amending the Electricity Act, 1968. He 1
told NZPA later that the Labour Party wanted to see an across-the-board tariff cut for South Island consumers of about 30 per cent. On top of this he hoped a 10 per cent to 20 per cent cut could be made to South Island industry to enable it to compete fairly with other industry. The Opposition also wanted the 10 to 20 per cent tariff concession to apply to North Island industry as an “inducement,” Mr Ridley said. The bill is expected to be introduced but will go to the bottom of the Order Paper with five other Opposition private members’ bills.
