Softball squad reduced
The Canterbury men’s representative softball squad has been further reduced by two players for the national tournament at Invercargill from December 28 to January 2. After the season’s first provincial fixture — a double-header against Otago at Dunedin — the big Canterbury squad was trimmed down to 16, and now Doug Chee (Richmond) and Dale Eagar (Papanui) have been omitted as well. The final squad was settled on after Canterbury’s unbeaten performance in the South Island Jefferies Cup
tournament over the weekend. Three players in the Jefferies Cup squad — David Bradbury, Tony Mountford and Billy Rintoul — were unavailable for that tournament, but have been retained for the nationals. Bradbury, out of the Jefferies Cup because of an injured wrist, will be one of the pitchers at Invercargill, though Geoff Roberts is challenging his claim for the No. 1 spot. Roberts ensured his team place with an outstanding performance on the mound during the South Island tournament. The top nine is already!
falling into shape and the representative selectors (Messrs Dennis Rea and Arnie Hall) will have further chances to work out their best combination when Canterbury meets Wellington in a double-header at Papanui Domain this Sunday. The full squad is:— Bryan Mountford, Bradbury, Tony Mountford, Rintoul, Paul McFarlane, Leon Fife (JaksUnited); Alan Hall, Michael Hall, Ray Marsh, John Daly (Jaks-City); Kevin Steel (■Richmond); Gordon Phillips, Eric Tomlinson, Roberts (Papanui).
