Gold shares higher
Record bullion prices on international markets caused a scramble for scrip in major gold producers on Australian sharemarkets yesterday. Central Norseman rose 100 c to a record high of 950 c, G.M.K. was up 20c to 322 c, and Emperor Gold gained 12c to 110 c. Some profit making was evident at the higher levels. Oils were again keenly sought, with Ampol Exploration up 5c to 215 c, and B.H.P. jumping 11c to 1005 c. Woodside Petroleum shed 2c to 188 c, but Bridge and A.O.G. gained sc. The battle for control of Ansett Transport was relegated to the backseat with the News, Ltd, brokers quietly standing in the market. uncontested, offering 225 c. The News, Ltd, order for 4M Ansett shares appeared to be about half filled. Base metal stocks received
a boost from the higher gold prices, with rises bv Bougainville Copper, MIM, and Western Mining. Sugars were bullish, and Bundaberg Sugar rose 30c to 660 c and Pioneer Sugar 20c ■ to 255 c. The banks were firm.
