Land for motor-cycling

Ratepayers should have no right of objection over a proposal to use land on Pound Road for "motorcycle recreation,” the Paparura County Council was told last evening. Cr A. Y. Shuker said the area was sparsely populated and already had an existing “motor facility.” Ci* R. S. Mayer had questioned a recommendation for the council to support the proposal which already has approval from the council’s reserves committee. Cr Mayer had not been in- i eluded in discussions about.i the proposal, although he was

the representative of the riding involved. “I consider when things are mooted in an area that is my own. I should be inform-; ed. A brief resume should have been given to me,” Cr; Mayer said. The County Chairman (Mr J. Y. Pethig) agreed it would have been wise for Cr Mayer to have been told about the; proposal. Cr Shuker said he accepted responsibility for that, as he had spoken strongly in favour of using the land for; motor-cycling at a reserves committee meeting. The Paparua District Coun-

cil, of which Cr Shuker is I chairman, considered the land in question “highly suitable for this type of acti- ! vity.” Cr G. T. Wright asked if : ratepayers in the area would have rights to object. “In my opinion, no,” said Cr Shuker. “If Cr Wright wants to have objections to everything, we may as well have another development bill,” The council adopted the; proposal, but decided that; the recreation officer (Mr P Walls) would have further! discussions about it with Crs;

Mayer, Shuker and D. R. Shipley, before the next council meeting. The County Engineer (Mr J. D. Annan) said the land, about 30 ha. had once been considered for use as a rubbish tip. It would replace land at Springs Road, now considered unsuitable for motor-cycling.
