Roads closed
Heavy rain has caused the closing of Arthur's Pass and part of the Haast Pass until further notice. The Automobile Association (Canterbury) advises that the Haast Pass, between Makaora and Haast, and Arthur’s Pass, is expected to remain closed for two to three days because of slips and washouts. Highway’ 80, between
Pukaki and Mount Cook, is also closed until further notice. The Lewis Pass is open, but extreme care is needed. The rail-road bridge at Taramakau is being closed for 30-minute periods during repairs to the bridge. State Highway 1 is open, although there is a possibility of surface water near the Rakaia River bridge. ;
