Standards for new fuels

Wellington reporter The prospective use of new fuels for the internal combustion engine, such as Liquified Petroleum Gas and Compressed Nat ura! Gas, has required new national standards lor them. These standards are needed to ensure that any conversions for these fuels are done safely. There are no international standards for either L.P.G. or C.N.G. so a new standard has had to be drawn up based on expertise in international gas engineering. A standard has been prepared in two parts. The first covering the use of L.P.G, fuel was vir- . tually completed in Octo- | ber and may be published soon. It has been based largely on a 1973 Australian standard, but takes account of new devel-1 opments since then. The second, covering | C.N.G, is also nearly ' ready. Less overseas work | was available so this is largely innovative. If the final drafts are approved by the Standards ; Association' the guidelines are planned for publication before Christmas.

Progress has also been made towards a drafts standard for C.N.G. compressors, equipment, and refuelling stations, A draft is expected to be available for public comment in December.
