Ice drill damaged
PA Wellington Damage done to New Zealand drilling equipment by moving sea ice in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, may increase the cost of the research project by about $200,000, according to the superintendent of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research’s Antarctic Division (Mr R. B. Thomson). The project is being carried out jointly by the division, Victoria University, and the Ministry of Works and Development.
Thirteen scientists have been working since August preparing for the study of strata deposited on the East Antarctic ice shelf in the last 30 million to 40 million years.
