Internal air-fare concern

Air New Zealand should start listening to critics of; high internal air fares which! were discouraging people from travelling to the South Island. Christchurch City councillors said yesterday. Cr R. A. Bamford told the City Council's public utilities committee that things were “getting out of hand” when people could fly to Sydney and return — on the cheapest off-season fare — for less than a round trip between Christchurch and Auckland. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr H. G. Hay) has received a letter from a North Island woman who said that she had never been to Christchurch, but now that she had saved for a trip had decided to go to Australia instead because of the cost of coming south. “We are just not in the world market at all today,” said the committee’s chairman (Cr M. R. Carter). It was even cheaper to flv from Sydney to Singapore than to make a trip across the Tasman.

The fare between Japan and Sydney was about half the fare between Japan and Auckland, he said.
