Wind stops Mt Cook training
Timaru reporter Gusty north-westerly winds and high cloud stopped eight members of the Special Air Service of the Australian Army from continuing their climbing training in the Mount Cook National Park yesterday. The climbers, based at the Plateau Hut (2350 m are training for an attempt next year on Gauri Sankar. a 7144 m peak in Nepal which has been climbed only once before, by a joint AmericanNepalese party. The Australians apparently made an unsuccessful attempt on Mount Cook a few <!a ys ago but it was renprted from the park's head<j?farter&. that thev had climbed Mount Dixon (3009 m They are expected back at Mount Cook village at the week-end. A German Antarctic North Victoria Land expedition which has been doing survival exercises in the region walked out to Mount Cook village on Monday after a two-day stay on the Annette Plateau and glacier exercisu on Mount De La Beche.
