Falcon chicks bred Off farm in 1976

New Zealand falcon chicks were bred in captivity on a North Canterbury farm three years ago during a study of the bird for a thesis. The thesis, a 60-page document, was written by Mr N. C Fox, for a doctorate which he completed last year. A Press Association report from Hamilton said that the first New Zealand falcon chicks bred in captivity were hatched on November 21 at the Ototohanga kiwi house. The report appeared in “The Press” of November

Mr Fox has since gone to Britain, but the University’ of Canterbury has a comprehensive file of his work on the falcon. Mr Fox's thesis was entitled "The biology of the New Zealand falcon.” It dealt with breeding the falcon in captivity, its nesting habits, its territorial behaviour, and many other aspects. Mr E. C. Beauvais, a neighbour of Mr Fox’s, said that although the chicks hatched, they did not survive. There had been two lots of eggs hatched. One pair had made their nest in a tree, ahother in an aviary. Fertile eggs had been put under a bantam to hatch, said Mr Beauvais.
