A flag of our own?

Sir, — Guy Daigneault (November 27) makes two points, (1) that there is no widespread pride in the present flag and that we have no real flag at all, (2) that we should no longer proclaim our Commonwealth membership as a Dominion on our flag. In explanation of the first, he implies, in a sentence which misuses “ensign” for “flag” and “emblem” for “ensign,” that our flag is identical with the Blue Ensign. This is not correct. A new flag would not command as much respect as the present one; instead it would be seen as a political gimmick. The second re-

quires a discussion on Commonwealth membership. Tn fact, both points hinge on public opinion. Without statistical data, not the beliefs of a few correspondents, we cannot intelligently debate either, Finally, remember the Cook Islands, which have returned to a flag with the Union Jack. — Yours, etc., B. S. BENNETT. November 27, 1979.
