Rearing children
Sir, — Dr Ritchie (“The Press,” November 26) wants to inflict her ideas on society using the force of law to strike a blow at the heart of New Zealand — family life. What a giant “smack” at basic human rights. Other experts would like to set up counselling centres where children at risk can be helped before a crisis occurs. Clinics at schools would supply enough patients to keep them in business. Family life education presumes that families are incompetent. Perhaps all drivers should be removed from our streets because they are at risk. Big brother is well on the way to social control through our children’s minds. Let parents and teachers exercise authority responsibly and reject devious interference in the name of the child. — Yours, etc., H. J. NIHONIHO. November 26. 1979.
