U.S. and Iran

Sir, — A radio news item suggested that America might bomb or otherwise damage Iranian oil facilities if American hostages are killed. In view of New Zealand’s dependence on Iranian oil, our Prime Minister should surely seek an assurance from President Carter that such an attack on the world’s already critical oil situation will not be made. The right solution to the present crisis would be for America to agree to the idea' that the Shah should be tried, provided Iran will agree to a trial in some reasonably neutral country near Iran — say Egypt or Switzerland — where •he would get a fair trial. President Carter cannot solve the current impasse because he has apparently regressed from his earlier support of human rights to a more traditional American policy of support for dictators or former dictators regardless of their crimes and violations of human rights. — Yours, etc., MARK D. SADLER. November 26, 1979.
