Cerebral palsy appeal

Collectors for the Adult Cerebral Palsy Society will be on the streets today for the soc'tty’s annual appeal. The money will help pay for extensions to Independence House in Bristol Street, St Albans, where patients from Templeton Hospital are accommodated while they prepare to return to the commu ity. A recreation room and workshop at Independence House wete planned, as well as two four-bedroomed flats, so that the residents could become more self-reliant, said the appeal organiser, Mr A. MacKenzie. This was the first i : me in New Zea-

land that this type of scheme had been tried with cerebral palsy victims many of whom were accident victims with brain damage. There are 10 residents at Independence House, and the extensions will allow the home to take eight more. The estimated cost of the project, including fittings and furniture, is $170,000, cf which a Government subsidy is expected to give half. Last year’s appeal raised $4500, Mr MacKenzie said. A similar response this year, plus the gifts that the society hopes to receive, should cover the cost of .the project, he said.
