N.Z. man faces death penalty
NZPA -Bangkok A New Zealander appearing before a Thai court on a charge of possessing narcotics could face the death penalty if convicted. Grant David Jackson, aged 25, of Auckland, is jointly charged with a French woman of being in possession of 300 grams of heroi in.
Narcotics authorities in Bangkok have said that possession of more than 100 grammes of heroin for trafficking made a convicted person liable to a sentence of death in Thailand. The sentence is carried out by firing squad.
the case of the New Zealander it was doubtful the death sentence would be imposed if he was convicted. This was because of particular aspects of the case. The case could take some weeks to resolve. Hearings before a judge may drag on for several weeks or even months because a court hearing is not scheduled for completion in one session over a day or several days. Alan William Hughes, aged 31, of Dunedin, is awaiting trial in a Bangkok court on a charge of possessing what authorities said was a ‘small amount” of heroin. He was arrested on his way to Bang-'-r ' ,r Airport.
