Meeting on Rakaia

Recreational and wildlife groups in Canterbury have been invited to discuss the effects of future irrigation and power schemes on the Rakaia River. Such organisations as acclimatisation societies, the Salmon Anglers’ Association, and jet boat and canoe clubs have been asked to attend a meeting on October 18, arranged by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. The meeting’s purpose

was not to discuss the merits of any particular scheme, said Dr R. M. McDowall, the Ministry’s scientist in charge of South Island fresh-water research. It was rather to consider how use of the river by various groups would be affected by any changes to it. "Where conflicts of use occur it is important that people understand in what way their use of the river will be affected,” said Dr McDowall.
