Theft for children
PA Wellington John Daniel Walker’s family was reduced to living on potatoes, and so he stole to feed them, the Magistrate’s Court at Wellington heard. Walker, aged 26, unemployed, admitted two charges of burglary. Mr D. J. Sullivan, S.M., convicted him and ordered him to come up for sentence in six months if called upon. Prosecuting. Detective Sergeant M. T. Everitt said that the defendant broke into a grocery store on
August 30 and September 16, and took various food items. For the defendant, Mr W. Johnson said that his client was a victim of the depressed economy. He had been unemployed for some time and was waiting to receive unemployment benefit cheques. When these did not arrive the family was reduced to living on potatoes. The defendant had two children, one aged 10 months, counsel said. Only food for the child'en was taken in the burglaries.
