Corso decision
Sir. — The list of projects in the less developed countries which are currently supported by Corso (“The Press,” October 2) did not include any identifiable as family planning or birth control schemes. What is Corso’s policy on support for birth control in less developed countries? — Yours, etc., NORMAN MACBETH. October 3, 1979. [Marjorie Ockenden, chairwoman Christchurch Corso Committee, replies; “Corso’s policy on support for birth control and family planning schemes in less developed countries is: (1) This is a matter which must be decided by the people concerned. It is not our place to give support or otherwise to schemes of this nature which may be contrary to the traditions and beliefs of the people concerned. (2) Raising the standard of living has seemed to be a more effective way of reducing growth in population rather than trying to impose birth control and family planning schemes, which are often difficult to implement and not fully understood.”]
