Counties, Canty top rugby sides
Counties and Canterbury are the teams with the best records after four years of national championship rugby. Both sides have been remarkably consistent in the first division competitions since they started in 1976, and their aggregates outstrip those of other teams in the top grade. Counties won this year’s title after being fourth equal in the first year and then finishing as runnerup in each of the succeeding seasons. Canterbury shared fourth place with its rival in 1976 and then won the championship with a perfect score of 20
points in 1977. The team was third equal last year and fourth this season. Over the four seasons Counties has amassed 60 points, and Canterbury 58, out of a possible 80. Auckland and Wellington are next, each with 53. The final positions in this year’s championship were:—
