Another month for rugby coach decision
It will be another month before the Canterbury Rugby Union’s management decides on whether one or two selectors will be required to choose and coach the Canterbury A team next year.
The question received a good airing at last evening’s management committee meeting and opinion seemed to be in favour of retaining the two-man panel. It was moved that the selection procedure remain the same as this year, with two selectors named and one appointed as convenor. i The Sub-unions delegate, Mr P. Robinson, moved an [amendment that a sole selec--1 tor, with the power to coI opt be appointed. Earlier Mr [Robinson had spoken in I favour of this proposal, say-
ing that it had worked successfully in the country. Mr B. J. Drake, who had earlier suggested that the union should wait until they received the nominations and study the field before making a final decision, moved a further amendment. He said that selection candidates should specify their preference as to a sole selector or dual selectors. The committee could then see the talent available before making a final decision.
Mr Robinson’s amendment was defeated, but Mr Drake’s carried by seven votes to six. Mr G. G. Don abstained because he felt that the correct procedure had not been followed. A request for a second hand count resulted in the same vote.
