Herlihy pitches well
New Zealand’s prospects < in the 1980 world softball : series at Tacoma, Washing- , ton, have received a lift ; with the news that its No. 1 I pitcher, Kevin Herlihy, has 1 spearheaded his team, Bolt- t ers Saganaw (Michigan), to victory in the American 1 Softball Association’s nat- i ional championship. 1 There was an entry of 32 I teams and 85,000 spectators I attended the final. Herlihy, f aged 31, was named top 1 pitcher and “most valuable 1 player." f It was an excellent season 1 in the United States for Her- 1 lihy who won 70 games and i lost only five. He had turned (
down numerous offers to sign for American clubs in the past because of his job as manager of Hamilton’s Public Service Investment Society store. This time the society granted him six months leave. Another New Zealand pitcher, Owen Walford, won the nationals of the A.S.A.'s rival body, the International Softball Congress. Three of the final four teams from an entry of 22 had New Zealand pitchers with Walford, now living in the United Staes. hurling for the McArdles team from Midland. Michigan. These nationals were played at Bakersfield, California.
