Pay up 4.5p.c. soon

Most wage and salary earners will soon receive an extra 4.5 per cent in their pay packets, through the Government wage order announced at the end of July. The order will take effect on working days after September 3, and will apply to all awards and agreements registered by the Arbitration Court. It is mandatory for these categories, but employers will have the option to

pay it on voluntary agreements with a margin of more than 4.5 per cent above the award, according to the director of the Canterbury Employers’ Association (Mr N. M. West). Some wage and salary earners will be excluded from the regulations implementing the order. Most of these workers, whose pay is linked with State rates, are employed by local authorities.
