Postmaster faces 11 theft charges
PA Auckland A postmaster told the police that he stole $17,000 from the Post Office because his wife was a spendthrift, the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland was told. Noel Harris Leonard, aged 38, was appearing for a depositions hearing before Mr A. R. Gorbey and Mr D. C. Smith, Justices of the Peace. He pleaded not guilty to 11 charges of theft as a servant and six of using a document for a pecuniary
advantage. He was committed on bail to the Supreme Court for trial. Sergeant G. J. Crawford, prosecuting, said that the total amount involved in the charges was $17,000. He said that from July, 1978, to July of this year the defendant was employed as the postmaster at the Kingsland branch of the Post Office. The police alleged that he made out applications for unsecured loans using fictitious names 17 times. He had paid the money into his own accounts.
