Sales tax on crafts

Sir, — I would like to comment on the sales tax on craftspeople. I feel this will adversely affect the “do it yourself” traditions and ingenious inventions that the New Zealand life-style has been built upon. We are proud of this and it is being crumbled away. New Zealand craftspeople are honest, hard-working and have a love of nature. They do not have strong unions to threaten and hold the country to ransom. Defence-

lessness has caused the Government to hit them. Surely the internal deficit could be narrowed by cutting costs by other means, e.g. heavier penalties for drunken drivers who are destructive forces in our society, rather than by taxing talented and creative people who are building our culture. Finally, it is in the interests of the Government to encourage these people to stay in the country, not to join the other skilled people already leaving in droves as they are at present. — Yours, etc.,

G. THACKER. August 24, 1979.
