Carless days
Sir, — I support Tom Stewart (August 24). I would much prefer rationing with complete freedom to buy my petrol at any time including week-ends and use it as I please. I would then be free to cut my coat according to the cloth. The earless day system bears far more heavily on some than others. I live 32km from the nearest doctor’s surgery and over 90km from the nearest dentist, optician, chemist, hospital and numerous other essential services. There are no taxis or rental cars available nearer than 90km and public transport once a day does not always go where I may need to go; nor is its time of travel always suitable for appointments even if the destination is. My normal use of my car over recent years has been on about 40 days of the year at an average 9000 km a year. Having its availability withdrawn one day every week is an injustice I resent. — Yours, etc., S. M. KERR, Otematata. August 26, 1979.
