Railways deficit
Sir, — Once again Parliament has been presented with a Railways deficit. This year the amount is $70.8M, $23.5M of this being interest charges. This figure, nearly SIOM greater than last year’s deficit, is described by the Minister of Railways (Mr McLachlan) as a “most creditable effort” in view of the increased competition from other forms of transport. This unusual reply from Mr McLachlan raises two questions: Has the Railways Department become so inefficient that it can no longer compete with other forms of transport, or is the taxpayer expected to shoulder this burden ad infinitum? — Yours, etc., JOHN J. FORSTER. August 26, 1979.
